Thank you to Cameron Hill for this post while I catch up from my trip to LA! Enjoy.
It’s your boyfriend’s birthday and you’re freaking out. Why? Because you’ve only been dating for one month. Normally, that wouldn’t be such a big deal. You know how to play it casual and not rush things. But this man! There’s something special about him. As much as you try not to think about it, you can’t shake the feeling that it really was love at first sight. So what to do for his birthday? You know you can’t go big right now, or you might make things awkward. If you let your feelings get the better of you, you just might scare him away.
Don’t worry, honey. We’ve been there before and we’re here to help. Take our advice and things will turn out right as rain! Now, we know you have standards when it comes to men. We know you found yourself a suave, modern gentleman, and good for you! For this type of man, it only makes sense to get him modern gifts suited to his lifestyle, and that’s what you’ll find as you read on.
For the gadget obsessed. Does he cradle his smartphone or tablet as you might a newborn baby? Does he read tech blogs and then talk processors and pixels to you? If so, you’ve got plenty to choose from for him. Buy him a unique phone or tablet case. He already has those? Then get him a Bluetooth mouse for when he works away from the office or a 128gb SD card to hold that huge music library he’s got. If your man has a thing for photography, you can buy him a miniature pro camera lens to attach to his smartphone.
For the outdoorsman. Is your new man the hiking/camping/rock-climbing/all around outdoor type? Or just one of those things? Lucky you. You have an abundance of birthday gift options. Buy him an engraved canteen, quality compass, or cool pocket knife. No? How about new climbing ropes or harnesses or climbing helmet with a personalized design or decal? A battery-powered Bluetooth speaker might be just the thing for listening to music around the campsite (better than relying on the car and draining the battery until the engine won’t start). Or maybe he’s the type to camp in the dead of winter. If that’s him, you can buy him a new heavy coat with waterproof lining.
For the booze lover. Your modern gentleman doesn’t drink light beer or bottom shelf whiskey. No, he’s a discerning drinker who has trained his palate to expect nothing less than the refined and subtle flavors only artisan brewers and distillers can achieve. This kind of man likes to use the proper glassware for his beverages, so why not buy them for him. Beer snifters, scotch tumblers, and fine stemware: any of these will make an excellent gift for your booze aficionado. If he’s already set in that department, an engraved hip flask, stainless steel mixology set, and high quality metal bottle opener should go over nicely as well.
For the sports lover. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know if your boyfriend is a sports guy. And if you been paying extra special attention (we know you have), you’ll know exactly what sport he loves best, which team is his favorite, and which player on that team he adores most. Good so far? Then you’re golden! Buy him tickets to an upcoming game (he’ll bring you, of course). Or find some team memorabilia like a jersey with his favorite player’s name on the back or official ball bearing his team’s logo.
When you’ve found a special man that just might be the one, it can be hard in the beginning to know where to draw the line between too little and too much. This is especially true when it comes to birthday gifts. We understand, and if you follow our above advice, you’ll find the right gift for him, one that shows just how much you’re paying attention without smothering him with too much too soon.
