Proud to be chosen as the Why Not Girl of the Week! – yours truly

A fellow Arizona alumnus has chosen me to be the Why Not Girl of the week on her blog, Why Not Girl! The premise behind the blog is to feature and embrace women who take chances and follow their dreams. I think there is a special message here to any woman choosing to try something new in their lives. It may be taking a new class, moving cities or in my case, starting my own business. Life is about risks and taking chances and we need to embrace change and move forward! Thanks Lauren for choosing me for this week’s Why Not Girl of the week! I wish you and your blog great success in the future and hope to meet you one day in San Francisco. You can check out my interview here and this may explain to some of you the real reasons behind writing the blog and what it means to me to be a Why Not Girl of the Week for May 1!

1. How/why did you decide to say, Why Not!

From Northern California originally, but moved to LA to live with my sister and work in the music business for William Morris, Irving Azoff, MTV, and CAA (behind the scenes because I break car windows and make dogs bark when I try and sing). This was fantastic until I realized I was approaching 30 and still wanted to be a groupie in a rock band. So, I packed my things and relocated back to San Francisco where the freaks got weirder and my dating life nearly stopped because the guys were more interested in looking at each other than me.

Then my life changed forever. My sister who was my best friend suddenly passed away and I was lost in life.

Miss you more and more every day Brenna. I love you always. Eternal best friends.

I did not know where I wanted to live or what I wanted to do so I thought that I would get back into music and start working as a slave again for some other manager or agent in the music business. To add more heartache to all of this, I went through two terrible breakups and needed a release. I decided to take everyone’s advice to write a book but started a blog instead called, www.melanysguydlines.com.

The blog started out as purely cathartic but as I continued to write and learn about blogging and social media I discovered an entire new world. This was my Why Not Girl moment! People assume blogging is something you do in your free time like writing a diary. It can be that way but it has become way more than that to me. I am proud to say that I have hired my first employee and have an intern in just 10 months of creating the Melanysguydlines.com brand that is all MINE.

2. What has been the most rewarding part of being a Why Not Girl!  The most challenging?

The most rewarding things of being a Why Not Girl thus far has been to see my brand grow on so many different social media platforms, being accepted to some fantastic name brand affiliate marketer programs, and running into people I have not seen in years at the University of Arizona basketball game calling me “Melanysguydlines” instead of just Melany Berger.

The most challenging part is to try and break the “stigma” about blogging. It is hard. Trust me. If you want to monetize your blog, you need to be working 17hour days. I do.

It is worth it though. I find the work creative, challenging, fascinating, endless, and totally rewarding. The social media space changes so rapidly so there is room for me to make my way and continue on my path to becoming a leader in the industry.

3. What is one lesson you have learned in your quest in being a Why Not Girl!

I have learned many lessons being a Why Not Girl and navigating the social media world. Stay true to who you are and don’t just trust everyone. Research, research, research! You always need to be well informed and don’t rush in decision-making. There is no short cut to success. It is all about hard work, dedication, and passion for what you do. I see a lot of entrepreneurs but the really great and successful people that stand out to me have the most passion in their eyes. I know I have that fire.

4. Who would you say is a Why Not Girl! that has inspired you?

My inspiration and the reason I am who I am! Love you Mommy!

My inspiration and the reason I am who I am! Love you Mommy!

Easiest question. The most inspirational Why Not Girl in my life is my mother. She is amazing. I would not be doing what I do today or be who I am without her. She is my best friend in the world and so supportive. She is honest – and I need that. Not only is she all of these things, but she is the best businesswoman I have ever met. She is so well respected by her peers and people love her. She always knows what works and if it doesn’t, she will find a way to make it work and WELL. My mother has been through everything with me and still finds a way to be the backbone or our family. I am so appreciative and grateful to have been blessed with her as my mother and I am very lucky to be able to learn from her each and every day.

5. What other ways do you plan to say Why Not! either now or in the future?

I plan to say Why Not NOW and in the FUTURE by putting myself in new and uncomfortable situations. This is the only way you can learn in life and to grow. I hope that I can branch out and be presented with new opportunities, which will give me the chance to step out of my comfort zone. I have quite a few things brewing but you will have to stay tuned to find out!

My family dedicated a preschool in my sister's name. The Brenna Berger Adath Israel preschool is in San Francisco.
