Don’t Do These Things At A Social Media Conference

And…. commence packing ….again! I hate packing but have decided not to fully empty my suitcase any more because I am always on the road. Thanks to BMW for giving me this M suitcase so I can travel in style. And where am I off to next? Well, Social Media Marketing World in San Diego, CA. This is by far one of the best conferences and I highly suggest attending if you have the chance.

M!!

Last year, I wrote a post called 16 Things Not To Do At (Any/Social Media) Conference and I just re-read that post and LOL’d. No wonder why this is in the Greatest Hits Section! READ IT!
I am sure I will have more to add after SMMW15 conference but I wanted to highlight some of my favorites from that post.

Not knowing your competition. Know if anyone is dominating your niche in the market. I am 70% sure there may be someone doing what you think you have created. Can’t you hear Drunk Uncle from SNL saying “I’m prrrrrrrreetttttyyyy suuuuuurrrrrree…..” someone is already doing that? Do your research!

Do not wear high heels during the day so you look like a wounded stork walking through the hotel. This will make people notice you but not in a good way and then you can’t attend the rest of the conference and have to call in wounded the second day.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Look at me. For some reason people underestimate the curvy blond girl, with jewels, makeup and heels (I can actually walk in). If you need another example, just look at Mark Zuckerberg.

Don’t blend in. You don’t have to look like everyone else. Stand out (I am not saying wear bandage dresses or flip flops with dress slacks but a little flare helps). A little flare and be sure to check the weather. Just because you are coming to sunny CA does not mean we don’t get cold weather. There is an app for that!

Do you have anything to add to my list?

I DO!

Don’t spam people and pitch them blindly because you share some random contact or may be in the same social media group. Social is social so be SOCIAL!

No one wants to be pitched at. Let it come naturally. Not everyone you will meet at a conference is going to be someone you can work with. Get to know them first and then after a relationship is fostered (and only then) make a pitch. Don’t be that guy trying to sell the entire conference. There is a fine line between hustle and being annoying.

DO: Attend meet ups with people you know online and may have never met in person yet! Check out this meet up all about the newest app Meerkat with two of my favorite tweeters! Not to miss!
If you are not attending, don’t worry, you can follow everything via me on twitter!

Now, what else am I going to pack? Never ending question.
(I already have my University of Arizona shirt packed so I can cheer on my Wildcats in the Sweet Sixteen from San Diego. I wouldn’t forget that. Now where are my #smmw15 wildcats at?)

**Stay snarky my friends!**

Great tips! You’re so right, people tend to forget that “Social Media” is just that, SOCIAL. It’s just good business smarts to know your competition because that’s what will give you the edge! Thanks for sharing the secrets to your success!!
