Why It’s So Important To Keep Your Dog Healthy

We all love our pets, and they are certainly a well-earned member of our family. And this is why it’s so important to look after their health just the way we look after our own and our children’s. Not only is a healthy balanced diet vital for your dog, but so is checking their bodies for any problems that may arise. As much as we wish our dogs could talk to us, they can’t! So it is our responsibility to look out for any health problems. Below I’m going to take a look at some of the issues that can arise that should be on your radar.

Fur

You should groom your dog every evening as not only will this relax him but it is also a good time to check his fur for any bites, scratches, sores, fleas or ticks. Fleas and ticks love the soft, warm fur of dogs and like laying their eggs there too. If you are worried about fleas, you can run a flea comb through your dog’s coat. You can also use companies such as petcarex to get flea medication for your pet. They offer a range of chewable tablets that your dog can take. These kill fleas before they can start laying eggs.

Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is really important for dogs and you should get your dog used to having you brush his teeth from when he is a puppy. It is often an overlooked part of a dog’s health regime but it an extremely crucial part of keeping them well. Problems with their teeth and gums can later lead to problems with their heart and kidneys of bacteria seeps into their organs. If your dog has bad breath, is drooling or is pawing at his mouth, he may be experiencing tooth pain. If you notice any of these signs, you should book him in to see the vet. Always have a good look in your dog’s mouth to see if you can see any problems such as swelling or bleeding too. Here is a guide on how to clean your dog’s teeth.

Ears

Dogs can be very susceptible to ear infections. If your dog is scratching at his ear, it could be a sign of a problem. And if you notice an oozy yellow or brown discharge coming from his ear then he is likely to have an infection. Ear infections can be very painful for dogs, much like they are for humans too. You will be able to get a cleaning solution to help heal your dog’s ear, and if you take him to the vet, he will probably be given antibiotics to take. Even if your dog does not have an infection, you should get into the practice of cleaning his ears every few weeks. This can be done when you groom him, and you can make it part of his routine. Take a look here for more advice on ear cleaning. Never use Q-Tips on your dog’s ears. Instead use a cotton ball. Dampen the cotton ball with a mineral oil or a cleaning solution made especially for dogs.

    Hey Laura,

Great tips on cleaning your dogs ears. One important point which is worth mentioning is to reward your pup before and after the ear cleaning so that they associate the activity with good things, like lots of lovely treats.

We have produced an infographic on the subject which can be found here (https://propooch.com/blogs/news/infographic-cleaning-dogs-ears) which might be helpful to your readers as a visual guide on exactly how to complete the process with minimal fuss for you and the dog!

    Thanks

    Lucy
