My Guest Lecture At The University of Arizona On Social Media

#BEARDOWN #WILDCATFORLIFE

Last week, I drove to the University of Arizona to speak to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Department students about Blogging, Social Media, and being a Social Media Influencer. The school offers several different options of Majors and Minors focusing on a variety of topics surrounding the innovation and technological advancements of computer technology including the ever-changing landscape of Social Media. I wish they had these options when I was in school.

The students were a bit hesitant at first but opened up pretty quickly. The professor had them prepare questions prior to my arrival, which was a great idea and gave the lecture a very fast paced feel. As you know, I am always on the move.

The class pulled up the blog and all of my other social media sites to create the questions for me. They ranged from a variety of topics and I did not know which student corresponded with the question asked. Here are some examples….

Q 1: What was your Major?
A 1: I majored in Communication because it is a broad liberal arts major and can be applied to every industry. This is true and I used it while in the music business and now in Social Media all the time. Communication is the backbone of social media. Without relationships we can’t be social.

Q 2: Have people ever been offended by your snarky humor?
A 2: Yes, I lost a few friends along the way in the beginning. But, at that time people were offended a little easier because sarcastic and snarky memes were not as prevalent. But, that is my humor and like I always say it is entertainment and you don’t have to have the same sense of humor as me. If you don’t like it ….go somewhere else.

Q 3: Have any of your blog posts got you into trouble? Which posts?
A 3: Miss Piggy – Guydlines For A Better Looking USA and Frienemy. These are some of my favorite blog posts still today. The Internet is full of people waiting to be insulted but I still love those posts. (They pulled up the old posts and I could hear giggles in part of the room). HA!

Q 4: Is it hard keeping your personal life separate from your business?
A 4: Yes, sometimes there are things I would like to keep private and it does become a little challenging. Like the time I signed up for Tinder and was called out immediately by someone for being a dating blogger and he questioned my intentions. He thought I was just on there for fodder on the blog. Guess it comes with the territory.

(This one has to be in quotes because it is funny)

Q 5: “After meeting Melany I don’t think this question still applies anymore but…” says the professor. “Are you like a Kardashian?” Asked the professor.
A 5: “No way! I make fun of them. Didn’t you see my post today about that family? Now, who asked that question?” I answered followed with silence and then laughter throughout the classroom.

I did my job! I made them laugh. Laughter is always good and that is why I started my business in the first place. It all started as a cathartic outlet for me and at the end of the day a place to laugh.

I had such a wonderful time talking with the students and apparently I am still cool enough to be asked by one of them to go out for drinks that night. Funny.
Cherry on the top was an email I received from one of the students in the class that read:

Melany,

Thank you for coming and speaking to my class today about your passionate career and all that it entails. I really enjoyed hearing the honest truth behind the many industries you have worked in. Thank you for teaching me more today than I have learned in almost any Communication class at the University of Arizona … Seriously.

Thanks again!

Best,
Dallas J.

WOW – I am still blushing.
If that wasn’t enough, one of my favorite faculty Sr. Director of Development College of Social and Behavioral Sciences attended the class and sent me this message along with a few photos!

Hi, my name is Loraine and I am a new admirer to your site. I just read the Miss Piggy-Guidlines to a better looking USA. I haven’t stopped laughing my head off. You should write more of this kind of humor. I wish I could have attended your lecture. Will you be doing any more soon?
    Thanks for the good laugh.

Hi Melany, I don’t know if you remember me but I was one of the students that attended last years lecture. I can’t believe that you returned this year and I didn’t know about it.
Sorry to hear that not everyone enjoyed your sense of humor and honesty. Maybe they are insecure in their own skin. Otherwise, too too funny. I am one of the students that also sent you a pm about the possibility of interning with you. Thanks so much. CD
