Heroes In Houston: Cake & Bacon Feeding The Front Lines

Heroes In Houston: Cake & Bacon Feeding The Front Lines

I have written a few posts in the past on the difference between social media influencers and celebrities in which there are many. But, today I want to address something different. This post addresses perhaps the most important aspect of being a social media influencer and that is using social media influence for the most important need of all: the good of humanity. I could discuss the super saturated social media world with everyone claiming to be a blogger or influencer now but instead I want to embrace the fact that we are all influencers in one way or another. We influence our families, friends and social network no matter how big or small. You do not need a title to make a difference and the current events occurring with Hurricane Harvey has made this clear to me.

My eyes have been glued watching the wrath and destruction of hurricane Harvey. I can’t believe what I am seeing while watching the coverage from my dry, warm home in Arizona and my heart aches for everyone and every animal affected by this nightmare. Sitting and watching the news, engaging with posts from friends and others living in the areas affected by Harvey is what I was doing for the past week. It was not enough. I wanted to respect and keep my timeline clear as to not clog up social media for all people needing immediate assistance. But, I didn’t want to just sit helplessly and watch. I had to do something so yesterday my parents and I discussed finding an organization where we know that 100% of our donations would be received by the people who need them the most and not by some crook working at a non profit disguised as a martyr. We wanted to donate to an animal shelter because so many pets and animals were being displaced. We wanted to donate to the people on the front line of this disaster.

I posted something on my social media about this and have found a few great organizations in which my family and I have already donated. But, I know that not everyone has extra money to donate but there is always something we can do! Share the posts about ways to donate, heroic efforts, animals rescues and anything dealing with the tragedy. If one person sees your shared post then your influencer worked for the good of humanity. Open your wallet if you can. Open your means of communication by sharing with your friend’s posts like this and anything else for Hurricane Harvey relief. You never know who could see your post and they could be the $50 or million dollar donor.

I did not realize how many people I knew in the Houston area but am blown away by the heroic work of so many especially two of my college friends from the University of Arizona. They have opened up their home to displaced families and have been working tirelessly helping people in the Houston area. Jeff and Sheryl Weinstock are a stellar husband and wife team and recently opened their small but critically acclaimed bakehouse and butchery commissary in Houston called Cake & Bacon.

Since the devastation, Jeff has been cooking for men and women on the front lines and for nurses and doctors. Sheryl has been ordering food, posting, replying and making sure Jeff reaches people who need it the most while taking care of their two small children. Nothing has been too big or small for this selfless and heroic family during Houston’s time of need. They are giving rides, providing food and are true heroes. I spoke with Jeff briefly this week after he picked up a family with a young child who had brain surgery and needed to get to the Children’s hospital. He explained to me about the problems getting food in and out of the area and making sure this family was getting something to eat. He said that a place had the audacity to charge this poor family $65 for 4 hamburgers. Not OK….ever and especially now!

Jeff explained to me that they were going to place an order for brisket and ribs and with the help of some amazing people he was going to cook until his money ran out.

After this conversation with Jeff, I knew I wanted to help him and that 100% of my donation would be used to feed people who need it the most. This morning Jeff sent me a video of dozens of people working out of a Brennan’s of Houston kitchen cooking 2000 tacos to be delivered to Harris County Sheriff Tactical command in Cypress. BRAVO! I am so pleased to know the Weinstocks, applaud the Cake & Bacon team for working tirelessly feeding hungry heroes and honored to have taken a little part in helping them do so.

They need food and supplies to help feed these people and we need to figure out how to get to him more. Can you help? If not, can you share this post? Please? If not now, when? They are going to need help for a long time in Houston. People are always there when tragedy strikes but they move on with their lives if it does not directly impact them. They forget. Houston will not forget. They will need our help for a long time.

Also, I wanted to share this post from Anh Nguyen who has been a stellar example of what a social media influencer should be doing. She lives in Houston and has been a wealth of information for her fellow Houstonians as well as people watching in from a far. She is someone that I have had the pleasure of meeting in person.

“Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc and destruction across South Texas and the Houston areas. The Aug 29th edition has info on how to help. Recovery will take months and months – the needs will be long-term.”

Let me know if you would like to help out!

Thank you!
