Please enjoy this guest post!
This time we are talking BFF’s and how important it is to stay connected no matter how far away the two of you live from one another.
(I totally agree that surprising a BFF is super fun and she will love you for it. My BFF always surprised me for every Birthday until I moved to be closer to her in Arizona.)
Enjoy and thank you for the tips!
Your BFF is your rock, your everything. She knows you so well that she can even finish your sentences. Whether you’ve had the same best friend since preschool or college, she’s someone you never want to drift out of your life. Maybe you just graduated college, or you are your friend got a new job and moved across the country. Whatever the case may be, living away from your best friend is a difficult adjustment to make. However, there are many ways you can stay connected with her to keep the friendship lasting. Here are some tips on how you can stay in touch:
- Communicate as Much as Possible
It’s super important to keep the lines of communication open with your BFF when you live in different cities. Find a communication method that works for both of you so you will always be updated on each other’s lives, whether that’s texting, phone, video chat or email. If you both have super busy schedules, be sure to schedule times to chat during the week so you’ll know you have time set aside to catch up. It’s important to still make time to dish about your job, relationships and new friendships, and give each other advice. Video chat is great for communication because you’ll actually be able to see her face, so it will (almost) be like you’re right there with her.
- Accept Change
Transitioning from seeing your best friend pretty much every day to none at all can be really difficult to adjust to. The most important thing you both can do is accept this new adjustment and remember that you can maintain a solid friendship even if you live far apart.
- Reaffirm How Important She Is
Never let your BFF forget how much she means to you. Even if you just send one small text letting her know how much you appreciate her, that will mean the world to her. Keep her as involved in your life as you can – call her when you need advice on online dating, work, or even what you should watch on Netflix.
- Don’t Forget Her Birthday
Make her birthday feel as though you are there with her! Send your BFF birthday flowers, a sweet card, or a personalized gift box on her special day so you can show you’re thinking of her even when you can’t be there. Don’t forget to call her, too! She’ll really appreciate it.
- Visit Whenever Possible
It can be tough to visit her if you live on two opposite sides of the country, but make an effort to visit your BFF whenever possible. Fortunately, there are many ways you can buy plane tickets without breaking the bank. Sites such as AirFare Watchdog, Travelocity, Priceline and Kayak are great resources to help you find the cheapest flights possible no matter what time of year. So, even if you have to take a red-eye to get there, it will be so worth it.
- Surprise Her!
Does your BFF love surprises? Plan an impromptu visit to see her and that will be the ultimate gift! Or, you can send some nice flowers or a gift certificate to her favorite store that she will absolutely love.
Sometimes it’s nice to keep in contact with your BFF a traditional way – snail mail! Send her a nice postcard or her favorite magazine. The next time she checks her mail, she’ll be so happy to see a little surprise from her bestie. You can even make her a little care package. Who doesn’t love getting an unexpected surprise in the mail?
- Start a Book Club
A fun way to connect is to start a book club with your friend. Take turns choosing books, and then have little discussions after them. This is a great way to read more books while having something fun to keep you two connected. Choose books that are relative to your age and what you are both going through, and alternate them with more fun, fiction or classic literature novels. You can also have a movie or TV show club. Remember when you and your BFF used to binge watch shows together? You still can! Choose a TV show or a list of movies you’ve both been watching, then each watch them on your own time. You can have discussions once you’ve both finished them, and it will be like you never left each other.
- Honesty is Key
It can be really difficult to keep in touch with someone when you live in different towns and time zones. It’s important to let your BFF know if you’ll need to be out of touch for a while. Keeping the lines of communication open is essential. Schedule some extra phone time if you know you won’t be able to communicate for a long period of time. That will assure her that you really do care.
No matter how far you live apart, it’s possible to sustain a long-distance relationship with your best friend. It will just take a little more effort, but with time, you’ll be able to adapt to the changes and never miss out on the important things in her life.
